Angel Maxine, Ghana’s first openly transgender musician, says the country should accept that people like her exist.
She criticised a bill proposed by Ghanaian politicians, known as the Family Values Bill, that would punish those who identify as LGBTQ+.
Angel who prides herself as Ghana’s first openly transgender musician, has disclosed that she was born effeminate and with time has come to accept who she really is a woman trapped in a man’s body.
In an interview with BBC News Africa, the musician who is currently pushing against the passage of the anti_LGBTQ+ bill recalled how she was mocked by her peers for acting like a girl.
It was a living hell, right from the name calling to be looked down upon for her style of dressing.
“ I always felt like I was living in someone’s else life. I was called “Kojo Besia” & “Obaa-Bema” literally means, she-male or male-she. And it got to some point I had no option but to accept and own it. I am Ghana’s first transgender musician.
“Angel didn’t pick up nobody’s lifestyle or somebody’s culture. I was effeminate from birth. Even though I received backslashes from peers and families, I was like this, really tired and this is me. So, I started doing my music career openly, wearing my shorts and Santiago boots and all that.”She told BBC News Africa
