Footage from Qatar appears to show former Cameroon and Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o attacking a man shortly after the World Cup clash between Brazil and South Korea
The Cameroonian legend has been a regular at games in the Middle East and was in attendance once more for Brazil’s last-16 showdown with South Korea.
While many walked away from that contest happy after seeing the Selecao put in a brilliance of a attacking intent during 4-1 win, Eto’o found cause to pick an argument with a cameraman outside the venue and became caught up in a violent scuffle, with La Opinion catching the shocking incident on camera.
Those around the Cameroonian attempt to hold him back as he approaches the man, seemingly attempting to grab and shove him away. He then appears to attack him with a knee, before being held back once more as the man – who seemed to have his camera confiscated by another man – gets to his feet.
“This shouldn’t have happened for whatever reasons! Violence has no justification!” one Twitter user wrote in response to the video. Another suggested those commenting should wait for further information to come to light before passing comment.
FIFA and the Qatari authorities will be under pressure to investigate what happened.
The former striker, who played for several top clubs across Europe including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter and Chelsea, was then led away by members of his entourage.
The 41-year-old was quickly angered after a brief exchange with the man holding the camera and needed to be restrained during the verbal confrontation.
Meanwhile, the man with the camera was able to get to his feet and walked in the opposite direction. Watch the video below ;
Earlier in the tournament, Cameroon manager Rigobert Song played down suggestions Eto’o’s pre-tournament comments put undue pressure on his side. Eto’o had backed his country to reach the final, but they were eliminated in the group stages after a defeat to Switzerland, a draw with Serbia and a victory over Brazil.
The game at Stadium 974 was a comfortable one for Brazil. The Selecao scored four first-half goals to have victory all but wrapped up before the break, with Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta all on target.
