In a stunning turn of events, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has lost her seat to newcomer Mike Oquaye Jnr. In a fiercely contested election held on January 27,2024, Oquaye Jnr. secured a decisive victory, garnering over 1,194 votes compared to Safo’s 328 votes. A third candidate, Sheela Oppong Sakyi, received a little over 186 votes.
Safo, a prominent lawyer and politician, has served as the appointed Minister of State in charge of Government procurement and the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. She is well-respected within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and was widely considered a frontrunner in the election
Firstly, Oquaye Jnr., the son of former Speaker of Parliament Mike Oquaye, benefitted from his father’s strong political legacy and name recognition within the constituency. Additionally, Oquaye Jnr. ran a well-organized campaign, focusing on grassroots mobilization and door-to-door campaigning.
Safo, on the other hand, faced criticism for her absenteeism from parliament over the past year. She was accused of neglecting her constituents while pursuing her ministerial duties. This, coupled with a general dissatisfaction with the performance of the NPP government, likely eroded public support for Safo.
