Kuami Eugene, a popular highlife artist, has responded to comments made by Samini, a dancehall/reggae artist, who suggested that Kuami Eugene’s local sound may limit his appeal internationally.
During an interview on TV3’s Day with Berla Mundi, Samini expressed his preference for Kidi over Kuami Eugene. Samini mentioned that Kidi’s music had a stronger international appeal compared to Kuami Eugene’s local sound.
“When it comes to deciding between Kidi and Kuami Eugene, my preference would be Kidi. Both artists are talented and highly appreciated by their fans. However, when considering their potential for global recognition and performances on an international level, Kidi stands out. Kidi possesses a certain foreign appeal in his music, while Kuami Eugene tends to have a more regional sound and a primarily local fan base,” expressed Samini during an interview on TV3.”
Kuami Eugene, however, disagrees with Samini’s statement. When asked if he would change his style to attract a larger international following in response to Samini’s comments, Kuami Eugene, who appeared on a later episode of the Day Show, stated that he would not do so.
He believes that altering his sound to appeal to a global audience would mean sacrificing his authentic Highlife sound, which he is not willing to do. Additionally, he mentioned that although he respects Samini’s perspective, he will not take any advice because his songs, which showcase his genuine brand, have already achieved success on a global level.
“I encountered a minor issue with that, but ultimately, it’s Samini. Therefore, I have chosen to disregard it since I don’t believe I can accept any advice from him. If I were to follow his advice, it would require me to abandon high-life music, which predominantly consists of 80% Twi. I would have to let go of our authentic sound and pursue what he is suggesting. However, I am currently performing songs like Angela, Wish me well, and Confusion for crowds of 2000 white people.”So I don’t understand what he’s saying but he’s a legend. But I mean, I’m sorry I can’t take any advice from that. Big love for Samini but I can’t agree with that,” he said.
